6:30 a.m.

Ulm

Each town has something unique in the world. Usually something boring and of no significance.  As for instance Speyer has the world largest Romanesque church. In the photo above you see the world tallest church at 6:30 in the morning. And as being the tallest one wouldn’t be enough, it’s either the largest Lutheran church in the world. So it seems that mankind needs superlatives for its self-esteem, for its identification. Bigger, stronger, faster – a recipe for success?

I don’t like winter!

Winter impressions

Since weeks there isn’t any sunshine here. From time to time at least things appear in a new light. But it usually lasts only a couple of moments until the weather changes the landscape into a damp and muddy neighbourhood again.

I don’t like winter!

Rediscovering Leisure

Leisure

Recently the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit wrote an article about rediscovering leisure. An examination regarding the permanent acceleration of life and its impact on people and society. As I today saw Maria in this relaxation the article rushed into my mind. I caught my Leica and took this shot.

Venus’ Birth

Yesterday I got a 50mm lens for my M-System and this is one of the first pictures I shot with it. The painting atop my lovely wife is a clipping of Botticelli’s famous “The birth of Venus”. Classicists would probably discover an inconsistency - because it’s mirror inverted.

Dove on a Branch in Winter

This photo was taken at the city park in Speyer. Have fun finding the dove in the picture! The background shows the Imperial Cathedral of Speyer, which is almost 1000 years old. The cathedral contains also the burial chamber of a few German Emperors from the middle ages. One of them is Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. His walk to Canossa is still used nowadays as figure of speech that expresses (unwilling) penance.
It’s always remarkable again what men can create and how long it can last. Which heritage is going to be left behind by our generation?

My sister on visit in Germany

I know the light could be much better in this shot and 35mm aren’t really suitable for such a portrait. But however, I like it very much. My sister visited me during New Year’s leave. She is a scientist and spends some of her free time with knitting. This to capture was my intention. So thanks to her hobby I got a new cap and a new scarf, of course knitted, as Christmas gift.
